It's actually not a scam. The same air that makes your vegetables wither in the fridge oxidize the interior or your tires. It is also moisture free which shop air is usually not as you have said.

TSgt David L. I understand what water in a tire will do, but keep in ming, our modern tires are not pure rubber and may acually have very little real rubber in the tire, and although still sustainable to dry rot even with all the modern poly additives, our tires will wear out long before that happens. I have two 1957 Chevy's and two Model A fords, And what moisture in compressed air is the least of my worries, and I have never had a problem with using compressed air in my cars for well over 50 years. I have tires on my 57 Chevy that are at least 20 years old. I also have loaded tires on my John Deere tractor. The rear tires weigh over 600 pounds with the brine solution of massive amounts of salt and water that loads my tires. They are over 20 years old and are as good as new. The point I am making, is that if you are racing NSSCAR moisture in a race tire may be a problem, but the every day Joe really has no problem with standard compressed air in their tires.

CWO3 Dennis M. - I worked at a Goodyear Service Center. I did tons, literally, of calcium filled tractor tires. Ruined more leather boots than I could count. LOL
I use my shop air (air/water separator) in my cages, but nitrogen in my bikes. Shop air DOES oxidize the tires. They are built better than they ever were but I trust 2 tires with my life every day. To each his own.

LCDR (Join to see) I don't race my leased Volvo. If I need air in a tire I use my shop compressor that removes water so I guess I am okay if I want to race!, I guess if water is the issue and you are racing Bill, I agree put a water air separator on your compressor!

The only comment I'll add to the equation is that it's supposed to prevent dry rotting from the inside. Now if you own a quality compressed air system with a refrigerated dryer set up you'll not have a issue with moisture in your tires. I don't drag race my KIA soul either, but the ole 66 mustang is a different story lol.
