The whistleblower clearly understood the risks, but put the good of the country above his or her own wellbeing.
Of course the official isn't the real story, Cohen and the disappearing records are. I am so glad that this person had the courage to do what they did, and sincerely hope that the action leads to indictments; not of the official, but of Cohen and of whoever was deleting those records, and as far up as required.
This is making Watergate and Nixon's cover-up small in comparison. Of course with this all relating to Donald Trump, I am not in the slightest bit surprised top see corruption and cover-ups.
