The requirements for the award of the Silver Star do not distinguish between gallantry in flight and gallantry on the ground. It is awarded for "...gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States."

GySgt Bill Smith - I would be careful of judging another man's (person's) bravery. If you know the threat can kill you, and you are in the threat's active firing line, and you go back into it, toward the threat and into the line of fire, when it would easily be said you completed your mission WITHOUT going back into it, and by going back into the line of fire, you and everyone else around you knows you are ignoring your own life, and it all makes a big impact to the mission, then maybe you deserve a Silver Star.

Col Joseph Lenertz, I am not judging another man's bravery. I am questioning the standards it takes to be awarded a Silvers Star. Do they change over time or by conflict and MOS?

GySgt Bill Smith, you stated, "Comments like that reinforce the thought of how broken the awards system is." If the system is broken, then what do you suggest to rectify the situation?
You stated, "There have been many cases of awards being given for no reason." Originally, you didn't ask about "many cases of awards". You asked specifically about the Silver Star recipients in the link. Identify the Silver Star recipients in your link (or others for that matter) that are, in your opinion, undeserving of the Silver Star. If you're changing your question to awards in general rather than the Silver Star recipients in the link, then perhaps you should change the narrative of your question at the beginning of the discussion thread.
You stated, "So your awarding authority has no merit." Firstly, GySgt Bill Smith, they are not my awarding authority. Lastly, it's not the merit of the awarding authority in each of the situations that you provided that you are questioning, it's the merit of the recipients of the Silver Star, despite your protestations to the contrary.

GySgt Bill Smith - The provided link's 'synopsis' doesn't do justice to LCDR Brian Brurud. Perhaps if you knew what he actually did, you wouldn't be complaining.

I would never be the one to degrade the honors bestowed on fellow service members. If we were not present we could not possible understand the circumstance. God bless our service members and god bless our country. Thank you for your service.
