Leningrad was bombed to pieces but a vast labyrinth for Russians hide and fight from. The irony is when we attack countries, they become failed states where ISIS takes advantage of the chaos.

Same basic premise that Erwin Rommel wrote in his book 'Attacks'
That the city fight was costly and fighting with military operations in Urban Terrain was to be avoided at all costs. We had no choice in ramadi and mosul. Too bad we didn't get that status of forces agreement with the Iraq government. This was mission Impossible because the Iraq government is actually a puppet of Iran. Mukhtar al-sadr and his Iranian loving supporters eventually forced us out. Now, they're mad again because we destroyed chemical weapons in Syria.

Did we have no choice in Mosul and in Raqqa will be debated for decades to come - as will be the whole of both operations. neither battle ended in a surrender - and only caused the destruction of the cities and their population. They had to be retaken.. however - we viewed it from the physical aspect of retaking terrain - and not the aspect that terrain is not important - hitting the enemy hard and destroying them is more important.. By not doing that - how long did it take to encircle Mosul?

Good point you make on Rommel's book. Important lessons from WW1 that we still seem to miss.
