Just past midnight on April 15, 2012, a group of 20 men in tuxedoes lined up at the base of the Women’s Titanic Memorial in Washington, D.C. As a mild breeze rolled across the Washington Channel, a bell tolled. The crowd of more than a hundred people immediately hushed. A liveried waiter distributed flutes of champagne. As a young lad of 9, my family sailed on the SS America in May '59 from Bremerhaven, Germany to NY Harbor, with stops in France, England, and Ireland over about a nine day period. Our ship followed the same general route that the Titannic followed. We experienced a "doozy" of a North Atlantic storm; I estimate we encountered 40 ft waves, and I was horribly seasick - but it was perhaps the most exciting trip I ever made. Years later, I "googled" the SS America (American Star), and it had met it's end on the rocky coast of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands in 1994.

This incident was never more than a movie, the original A Night to Remember, to me until we went to a Titanic exhibit in St Petersburg many years ago. Being from New England I was much more familiar with the sinking of the Andrea Doria from watching the live newscasts about it when I was about 10. Seeing the artifacts and exhibis from the Titanic was like a slap in the face that this was a real event, not just a movie. Since then I've latched on to any media about the sinking. While the movie Titanic is great and became a blockbuster, I still prefer A Night to Remember.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen I always liked that film as well! I remember David McCallum of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and NCIS fame who played a radio operator.
