So kinda like back in the day? Discipline is not taught from a book and for some that came from an unruly background- at all.

SGT Gregory Lawritson - The Marine Corps actually does this. During the process between signing up and going to boot camp. I had to pass several physical fitness tests and a battery of other tests at MEPS. Sure, we had what they called "fat bodies" in boot camp, but they were put on strict diets that aided in the weight loss process.

I went through Basic and AIT on Sand Hill at Fort Benning. A few guys I know that went to the Marines boot camp and said it was very similar. I have also been told that “Relaxin Jackson” is exactly that by soldiers that went there. I think the Army should put every soldier through the same tough training and weed out some of the crap I’ve seen. I saw lack of respect for NCOs, AR 670-1 non compliant, and just totally dicked up. Now I am not talking all of them, but you know who you are. I’ll give the Marines this...they are all friggin nuts, but they are super disciplined like Army Infantry, Cav, and those soldiers that take their job serious. So why is the Army allowing this to happen is beyond me. I’m sure it wasn’t like this 20 years beyond. Get tough and get hard on recruits. Screw their feelings and whining. Make them soldiers and not just slots to be filled. Make Ft Jackson, Fort Sill, and wherever else the Army conducts BCT more like Fort Benning and I think it’ll stop. Those Drill Sergeants didn’t screw around lol.

I have to agree with you on Ft. Jackson, I spent 2 years there as cadre for Victory Brigade and I thought the standard was really low compared for when I worked for BCT at Ft. Knox. In my opinion they should have never taken basic training from Knox and moved it to Jackson.

SSG (Join to see) - I took BCT at Ft Jackson in 1980. We were all infantry slotted and every Drill Sergeant was an infantryman. It is up to the Drill Sergeants to maintain those standards. One of the Drill Sergeants and I served together later in a line unit. He was simply a squad or platoon leader there. We were all professionals.

SGT (Join to see) - No offense but that was 1980, I was there in 2005 thru 2007, after coming from Knox and was not impressed with Jackson. But I would venture to say in 1980 every training post was different than the last 10 years ago. I know your basic did not have females in the company, today at Jackson basic training units have co-ed and some units had problems with males and females getting to friendly.

When I went to basic we had a couple of chubby guys, by the end of basic they had dropped 30 lbs, and did excellent on the PT test.

Had a lot of Korean Vets as drills and they knew what they were preparing us for, they had been there and done it. Later in my career the job was handed out as a career path not sure that really helped.
