Good old Fox News. Here's what really happened.
1. Students working on the math problem comment in passing that the square root sign looks like a gun. It sort of does, and given the events last week, it's understandable that guns could be on their minds. Nobody called the police or was concerned about that.
2 a student then says this:
The controversial comment made, according to Superintendent Michael Doucet, ran along the lines of “now let’s get to work before I shoot you with a pistol.”
Normally that probably wouldn't have drawn any attention either. But after last week, with the constant talk about missed indications of the shooter and inaction by authorities, out of an over abundance of caution, authorities were called. Who would want to be the teacher/cop who let that slide and then have that kid come back and shoot someone, no matter how remote that chance?
But that story wouldn't fit the bill for attacking the education system and anti gun people in one article, so instead Fox goes with a different headline, knowing that a good portion of their readers never read beyond the headline, and that way the story goes viral that school teachers are so stupid that they call the cops over a math symbol. That simply didn't happen.
