The justice system is reactive in nature. Are you prepared to live in a society where "subject matter experts" determine that someone meets the psycho-social profile of a mass killer, and pro-active, pre-crime, criminal findings are made? Where arrest followed by remedial incarceration are the norm? It is damn hard to accurately determine a crime is going to happen, before it happens. Right now there are thousands of kids in America that have been expelled, that have an alarming fascination with violent ideations, who openly play "what if I..." violent scenarios out in their heads or with their friends. A minute fraction act on those ideations, the rest grow out of it.

We will never stop this. The plain and simple fact is that there are bad people who do bad things. There is no law that can change that. There is no social intervention that can stop that.

SPC David Willis - yup... you're right, knowing something has to change. don't know what. Sorry kids might get shot at school today... is clearly going to produce effective results.

SPC David Willis - No, one offers concern without substance, both do nothing.

Whatever. Keep your head in the sand and ignore the kids bodies piling up. Eventually it'll just become common place and well learn to ignore it like you.

SPC David Willis - My head isn't in the sand. My kids knew what to do if they were at school and there was an active intelligent threat. My grandkids do too; because I know that government cannot eliminate the threat. So far all you've offered is... nothing.

It seemed like there were some warning signs out there to look at but that is easy to say in hindsight. I heard that he was expelled from the school he went back to shoot at. Why was he expelled? Expulsions are rare and usually for very bad/dangerous behavior. The answer I heard from the locals (school board) was they could not tell us because he was a minor. So we are doing a good job protecting the privacy of the bad apple while risking the lives of others.

Were the pictures on Facebook, the fascination with guns and possibly violence, the expulsion and perhaps the loss of both parents over the last few years enough trip wires? Apparently not.

He seemed to have a caustic mix of fascination with violent ideology (some ISIS info and have seen him with a communist t-shirt as well) and weapons. With an expulsion and the statement of others about his strange behavior it sounds like the system protected him and left others at risk. It does no good to see things, say things and take no action. What do you do with a 19 year old who has been expelled once already, seems to have no criminal record, has a fascination with violent ideology and weapons? The answer in Broward county schools seems to be, nothing.

What we do know is that he was expelled, investigated by the FBI and part of a white supremacy group (terrorist organization). Now perhaps any one of those things by themselves would not be cause for concern... perhaps... But all three combined and we are just gonna act like there wasn't anything anyone could do? I refuse to believe that anyone would see that much smoke coming from their kitchen and go "eh" before not going to at least check it out.

SPC David Willis -
I just caught the tail end of a BBC newscast (speculation, but not verified), but the student they talked to believed he was expelled for repeated disruptive conduct in the classroom. If so, probably not even a misdemeanor.

He was not investigated by the FBI, he was reported to the FBI based on a YouTube video and the FBI was unable to positively identify who he was from the video. - CNN Newscast 5:48pm EST

Is there any assertion that his attendance at paramilitary drills was flagged to law enforcement? It appears that the ROF nut jobs stepped forward and flagged law enforcement after the fact.

Maj John Bell yea thanks but we already established your desired plan of action is to do nothing. Trying to have an actual convo here.

SPC David Willis - So do you have some source that:
_identifies some detail of his expulsion
_confirms that the FBI was able to conduct an investigation beyond a failed attempt to identify and/or
_that shows that his affiliation and activities with the "Republic of Florida" White Supremacy group was anywhere on the radar screen of law enforcement at any level?
