Depends so much on cultural perspective. We should ask ourselves this; if in 1944, the Germans were landing on Virginia Beach, and the Japanese were already in San Francisco...just what would our military have opted for if the A-bomb hadn't panned out? If it cost twenty fighter-bombers to sink a carrier, along with their crews...but one pilot and plane could do the same job, at some point, you reach a level where the loss is imminent, and only the economy of scale is relevant. We "know" how history played out. We ask ourselves why these young men would willingly die rather than wait for the impending surrender. Easy...because they didn't know how it would end.
