This is interesting....WHO LEAKED what was known by four people and then the Mueller team. NYTimes burned this source. Seems to be leaked after it was learned by the Mueller's team.

My guess would be that Donald F. McGahn leaked the info. Rather than potentially going down in flames with other members of the administration, McGahn leaked that he actually intervened to stop Trump from firing Mueller. Just my speculation, but I think that's what happened.

I've heard that it became known in the course of various interviews by various Congrints and SC. How the NYT got it remains unclear but your theory is believable. I haven't heard of any verified leaking by Mueller team. He knows they are dancing on a razor's edge. The Strozk-Page thing came out of the DOJ IG, including getting rid of Strozk.
