Sanctuary in the United States is not recognized as a legal option when attempting to prevent arrest on a criminal warrant. The Church "sanctuary" may be GOD's house. but it does not classify as a legal residence so Law Enforcement can enter to search for a suspect, albeit I doubt any department would disturb services if they were going on unless the culprit was possibly a danger to those inside the sanctuary. Then the safety of the public takes priority. The only Sanctuary that the United States has recognized in the last 70 some odd years has been for political refugees.
There are many liberal Catholic Bishops who have been speaking out lately saying the Catholic Church needs to be reinstituting the practice of Sanctuary for "refugees" (illegal aliens) to protect them from ICE raids. and to start refusing to adhere to federal laws whether the church is in a Sanctuary city or not, and with the Socialist Pope that is sitting now, it would not surprise me that it did not start soon. As for East Haven, this is not unique. there have been a number of situations where criminals and refugees have gone to churches and asked for sanctuary. With Connecticut's liberal democrat government, (state and locals) its a wonder there is not more of this stupidity.
