First question when a kid came to us saying his or her sibling was crying: Is he (or she) bleeding or puking? If the answer was "no", then it wasn't that big of a deal.
I heard some of these sayings from my parents, but used few of them on my kids. We did use, "Yes, you can go out a play, but be home when the street lights come on." We lived on Base often and it was safe for kids to go play outside or at parks on Base. It worked well until we lived in Alaska. In the summer the street lights come on about 11 pm.
