Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that January 7 is the anniversary of the birth of Scottish Canadian engineer and inventor Sir Sandford Fleming, KCMG who designed Canada's first postage stamp, left a huge body of surveying and map making, engineered much of the Intercolonial Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway, and was a founding member of the Royal Society of Canada and founder of the Canadian Institute.

Among other things he devised and advocated the standard time system used throughout the world.

Rest in peace Sandford Fleming.
Sir Sandford Fleming designed the very first Canadian postage stamp. Breaking with tradition, he suggested that it feature an animal, rather than a monarch. He chose the beaver: an animal that played a pivotal role in the development of Canada.

Sir Sanford Fleming had the right stuff, enduring in this life to over 88 years, and helped above his share the building of infrastructure in the U.S.'s neighbor to the north.
