Clearly the dossier was not OP research as claimed - it was a catalyst to an investigation. Curious if Bill gave Lynch a rough draft on the tarmac to get the ball rolling - she then made some edits that made it possible for the DOJ/FBI to investigate Trump team. Perfect cover - all thought this meeting was about Hillary - could have been about Trump. While speculative within the Clinton camp certainly possible.

Reportedly the catalyst to an investigation was George Papadopoulos drunken boasts to the Australian diplomat Alexander Downer in May 2016 at the Kensington Wine Rooms in London that the Russians had "political dirt" on Hillary Clinton, nearly two months before WikiLeaks began releasing the hacked emails. After WikiLeaks started publishing the emails, the Australians informed their U.S. counterparts and the FBI started investigating.

DNC hired Fusion in April, Bill met Lynch in June - just saying the timing makes the meeting even more suspect. Even Comey mentioned the meeting as a reasoning to the loss of faith in the DOJ investigation. As well CNN has reported that the FBI used the Steele dossier as a justification to wiretap a Trump associate, Carter Page.

Regardless of my speculations Steele used Russian sources to compile his dossier. He then went to the FBI late in 2016 with his OP research that was funded and giving to the DNC. That is a campaign rules violation yet FBI retained Steele until he was outed as the source. Again Steele went to DOJ official Bruce Ohr whose wife worked for Fusion during the campaign - that doesn't look good for the DOJ either.

For the FBI there are the texts messages from Strzok - that makes it rather clear there were anti-Trump discussion going on within the FBI that included Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe. This is not good for the FBI.

If the gist is that Trump colluded with Russia is it then not possible that domestic political influence is attempting to derail the Trump campaign/election?

All it would take is for the FISA Court to release the request form that explains the reason for the investigation. If the Dossier isn't there, it's a dead end regardless of who paid for it or actually prepared it. There is a reason, this has not been done.
