This actually is nothing new. Hacker types call this “social engineering”. I’d wager there are a lot of fake accounts in LinkedIn.
I know for a fact that there are a lot of accounts of deceased people. I’m reminded constantly of contacts and friends that have died every time their birthday comes up. Granted, I guess I could drop them as a contact, but you never know about after life networking! ;-)
