Thanks Maj Marty Hogan for letting us know that December 9 is the anniversary of the birth of American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral Grace Brewster Murray Hopper.
It is wonderful that the U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) was named for her, as was the Cray XE6 "Hopper" supercomputer at NERSC.
Rest in peace Grace Hopper!
Admiral Grace Hopper was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer. She developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. Here she explains a nanosecond to a room of learners.

My engineering friends in school used to use the rule of thumb that one foot of wire was roughly one nanosecond in unwrapping, replacing, and rewrapping wires between metal posts on the wire wrap board back planes of old computers to make timing adjustments as required by old engineering change orders. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

She Hated President Carter for Taking Away Her "Boat" (Shuttle Boat between the Washington Navy Yard and the Pentagon for Senior Naval Officers) as Part of a Cost Reduction Program.

Attended a computer course taught by her at the Washington Navy Shipyard DC when a Captain. The class was enthralled, even with a classroom full of her cigarette smoke.
