SSG Roger Ayscue I am a retired County Sheriff, but when I was in office as Sheriff, I incorporated this very program, and I gave out thousands of these same locks. I have been retired from Law Enforcement since 2008 and I am very happy to see this is being brought back. The the lock is only part of the solution. The device is good, but it alone will not be sufficient. If a child comes in contact with a firearm and it has this lock. they are safe. But, If the child comes in contact with a firearm that has no lock, that is where firearm safety programs are is so important.

Sgt Martin Querin - Exactly. Not either or, because as you know, even though there might be 2, 3 or even 4 or more firearms locked down with this device (which can be undone with the key pretty quickly). Most likely there are firearms in the residence that can be put to good use quickly if needed. If a child finds that fire arm, that is when the firearms safety training kicks in. When I was Sheriff I had a very young son, and I kept firearms at the ready, both concealed on my person when awake, and in various places in the house, You tend to make a lot of enemies after 18 years in law enforcement! it was those around the house that I used the child lock cable. But should my son find my off duty fire arm, I trained him for years on how to shoot and firearms safety (he got so good he out shot me many times at the range). And, So yes Sgt. there is no one solution, but firearms safety is paramount! People need to learn how to respect a fire arm and how to use it!

CWO3 Dennis M. I am an Instructor and I work on firearms. Both of my children have been trained not to touch one without permission of the owner, and even now at age 16 and 17 they will not just go pick up a strange weapon.
training is the key. I was on a television news program about kids and guns, the interviewer siad, on air, in a really snotty way, "Well we don't ave guns in our home and we NEVER will!" To this I replied, "Because you don't want your kids to learn about guns?" "Exactly!" she said. "Ma'am have you purchased for your child an X Box, or a similar gaming system, and does he have games like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto?" "Yes, all kids today ave them" "Well, I submit to you that your kid knows about guns from those super-realistic games, and that YOU have abrogated your responsibility as a parent to the Game Company and the media...I prefer to take charge of my own family."
Off camera, I reminded her of her declaration of being unarmed and pointed out that she as a celebrity had just made her home a target by telling on National TV that they were unarmed and always would be. She turned white as a ghost and asked how hard it was to buy a shotgun and learn to use it.

SSG Roger Ayscue - Excellent story and I will remember that story. Great idea about the video games. I think these games also desensitize them to the power and ability of a firearm since that is their only contact with such a weapon they do not receive any training on how to handle it and when they come upon one they tend to treat it like the weapon in the videos.
