Former Military Leaders Serving in Civilian Leader Roles
Subject: Military Leader Transition Survey ISO of PhD research in Organizational Leadership at Eastern University
Introduction: Military veterans, I am a PhD candidate in the Organizational Leadership Program at Eastern University. I am asking for your participation in a brief survey designed to help identify and explain the factors that contribute to leader identity strain experienced by military leaders as they transition from active military service to civilian organizational leadership roles. Leader Identity has to do with what you know, experience and value as a leader, how you perceive yourself as a leader and how others perceive you as a leader. Leader identity strain is defined as the conflict between veterans’ identities as former military leaders and their identities as leaders in their current civilian work environments.
I would ask that you read this entire form and ask any questions you may have before agreeing to be in the study.
Requirements: In order to participate you must meet the minimum criteria below:
• Have served in one of the following US military branches: US Army, US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, US Air Force
• Exited voluntarily from the military AND transitioned into a civilian leader role. A civilian leader role CAN include those without direct reports (e.g. a role where leadership must be exerted across function, the organization to accomplish the job...Six Sigma process improvement specialist, cross functional team leader etc.)
• Officer and enlisted participation requested and any rank upon departure accepted.
• Willingness to participate in an electronic online survey and potentially a follow up interview.
Confidentiality and Compensation: Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary and all your responses will be kept confidential through the Qualtrics survey tool and password/anti-virus protected computers. Additionally, any identifying information will be removed from the final research report. The records will be maintained confidentially for 5 years and then destroyed NLT 12/31/2022. In any sort of report I might publish, we will not include any information that will make it possible to identify a subject. There is no compensation for participating in the study.
Follow-up Interviews: I will be conducting follow up interviews with a small group of individuals to request further information and clarification in their individual experiences. If you are willing to participate in the interviews, you can provide your contact information within the survey itself. This group will be determined through analysis of the survey data and the available volunteers.
Risks: Participants may experience stress or anxiety as they review their leadership experiences, transitions to the civilian workforce and any potential identity strain or develop concerns about what will be done with the data and the possibilities that current employer could somehow get access to their responses. Participants can contact me at any time to discuss their concerns and can withdraw at any time if they are too anxious or concerned about participation.
Benefits: Findings from this study may be useful in assisting transitioning military leaders and their recipient civilian organizations, particularly human resource personnel, by providing an awareness of potential leader identity strain issues experienced during exit from the military and subsequent entry into new civilian leader roles. Individual participant awareness of leader identity strain issues may encourage them work through leadership issue they may be experiencing as a result of the strain.

If at any time you decide after having submitted your data that you do not want to participate in this survey, let me know and I will remove your data from the population. All our conversations will be held in confidence as well. This project has been approved by Eastern University’s Institutional Review Board as of the date at the top of this document. SP5 Jeannie Carle - See I am torn on that one. On the one hand, I would like to go and just bitchslap my younger self who got out of the Navy. On the other hand, had I stayed in I wouldn't have met my wife, and I wouldn't have my kids. I would also like to actually have done some research BEFORE going in. When I enlisted, I couldn't believe I was actually making it into the military, so I didn't know what I wanted to do. I didn't take the time to think about it, and so I became a sonar technician.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - OH Agreed. I wouldn't have my sons. Which means I wouldn't have my grands. Nope. But I sure do wish I could have seen ahead and figured a way to stay in with my eldest. I think I was meant to have both, so my youngest would have come along. My recruiter offered me 3 (three) choices of MOS. I didn't realize, of course, that my ARC was reallllly high, and I would have liked that better that rec spec. I sincerely wish I'd have done some research! But - was happy to be IN and had no clue the recruiter would withhold information, or (gasp!!!) LIE!

I conducted the survey and was a bit disappointed. I did not believe that a Navy Capt would forget, in my opinion, a significant sector of military leadership, CWO's. His exposure to this sector must have been limited.

My sincere apologies CWO3. In my haste to get this out, I did indeed omit the warrant officer community. You are correct that I did not have much exposure, but that was no excuse. This is a pilot study which I hope will turn into a full blown study. I will not forget to include you in that.
