In North Korea if a parent commits a crime the whole family is punished. Saddam Hussein did the same thing in Iraq. Is that the standard we are seeking here in the US? I guess in the hate filled minds of people like Geller it is.

Here's a quote from the NY Post article from a retired FDNY SGT:

But Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice, said sons or daughters of criminals can, and do, serve with distinction.

“This will probably be the first time we’ve hired someone with a family history of terrorism,” Giacalone said.

But he added, “If he passed the background check, we can’t hold him accountable for the sins of the father. You gotta give this kid a fair shot.”

Said FDNY spokesman Jim Long, “Omar Sattar will be judged on the merits of Omar Sattar.”

"Being treated as the son of a terrorist". I've known a number of Soldiers whose fathers were murderers and rapists and one pedophile. If we start disqualifying people for the sins of their fathers I cant imagine the end. What about cousins or uncles or maybe great grandfathers.

It's true. Wish him luck. He now has to prove himself as a NYFD Probie. Which according to my Fraternity Brother (who died from cancer after 9-11) is not a certainty.

For some reason, I suspect he will pass with flying colors.

LTC Orlando Illi - I'm just going to make a future prediction based on a plot wheel.
1- it will be hell for him and there will be much discord between him and his peers (who if they are smart will invest in body cams)
2- at least 3 incidents will happen with him that will be the cause of a news story later when some motivated reporter digs into his past.
3- he will either get rubber stamp approved or file a complaint for discrimination (fair odds of both)
4- and a few years into his career there will be an incident where he cites prior trauma in this training as a cause for his misbehavior.

AA Joseph Moody - I am afraid you may be right. Fighting fires in NYC is not for the faint of heart. Probationary status is a year long emotional and physical evaluation of suitability. If one has a weakness - it will be revealed.
