I agree with CDR Clark, our Aegis type ships are too valuable to risk in mine clearing duties. I was the Combat Systems Officer at the Aegis Combat Systems Engineering Development Site. It has been obvious there is a problem with our Arleiigh Burke Class and that needs to be addressed and corrected ASAP. It needs not be hampered or hindered with an experiment in mine sweeping. To say that a mine field could hinder the Burke's mission is not really true as the range of the VLS missiles makes this ship operational and lethal at any range. I am an old school retired Surface Warfare Officer, but are not most mine fields close to harbors or critical land installations? That would also place them in extra danger!

CWO3 Dennis M. I agree that it really becomes and Amphibious assault issue and that is why I would support leveraging the ESB concept. But I think we need to keep the capability to influence sweep with the 53s. It should not be hard to take the 53K and put a sweep capability on it. That way we are not tying up a bunch of assets for a mission that will be limited in both time and space. The CSG and their associated ships will just go around.
