I have used LinuxMint and KDE, and I love them both. I've been doing command line upgrade for several years instead of doing fresh installs. The stability has made me lazy when it comes to full installs.
Once you've swapped out desktop managers a few times, Kubuntu versus Ubuntu switching to a KDE default seems like pretty much the same thing. I might have to point to different repositories for the KDE updates, but I don't see it as being that big of a deal.
When the LinuxMint distro libraries went haywire a few years back, I pointed to Ubuntu for awhile -- same install and still on the same install. For my purposes, it's hard to distinguish any differences between LinuxMint and Ubuntu. Between either one and Debian, there are some differences.

Fair. And most people are generally satisfied with Cinnamon, XFCE, KDE, or GNOME anyway. Any extra DE installation only takes a minute and logging out to choose another DE.

SGT (Join to see) - I've tried out Cinnamon, XFCE, Gnome, as well as the lesser known desktops. Not all desktops have managers. But, all the LInux desktops are miles ahead of anything coming out of Microsoft. I must work on Microsoft, but there is always Cygwin when I have to do Microsoft. MDM (Motif Desktop Manager) is a lightweight desktop that runs a lot of the KDE desktop accessories. I've never gotten KDE to fully work under Cygwin, but things like GVim and Dolphin are excellent running with MDM.
