Trump made his initial comments while he was a private citizen, not even a politician. Does anyone really expect he would have changed his opinion just because he was elected President. A bell once rung cannot be unrung. The question posed by the reporter was like being asked the proverbial "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" There is no answer or non-answer that cannot be criticized. As President, he did not openly express a position on Bergdahl's guilt or innocence. Bergdahl confessed! What else needs to be said? So Trump doesn't like him; is that an excuse for pampering a traitor?

Yes but he reaffirmed those comments as the commander in chief. That's the difference. Actually once he got elected he should stop talking about things like this and his response should have been "I have no comment on active investigations in the military."
As President he did give the defense a chance to dismiss. Yes.

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff - I cannot disagree, but the "no comment" response would have been disregarded by the politically biased media and/or turned into whatever they wanted it to interpret it as saying. The only way he could have "won" in this situation was if the media never asked the question.

To me it boils down to Bergdahl is still in the military and the President is commander-in-chief. The president should have just stated "I have no comment on active investigations in the military." as he has done in the past with ongoing investigations.

SSgt Donald Libby - Hi, Don. Like I said to SFC Kelly Fuerhoff above, I can't disagree, but it would have done little good. He was going to get bashed either way.

Well the judge gave Bergdahl the chance to withdraw the guilty plea. He declined to do so. As well Trump's comment were made before he became President - so how could he unlawfully be using his influence. All they have is "I shouldn't comment on that, but I think everyone knows what I think on Bowe Bergdahl."
