The problem is occurring all over most of the industrialized world, the population is not reproducing or replacing itself. From another report I read, the birth rates are down to the point that the industrialized first world nations will be in real trouble in 20 years or so.
The most telling statement in this article is: "We have a large public sector and the system needs taxpayers in the future." Finland cannot support the social programs if the tax base dries up.

Yep. This is happening all across the developed world. Birth rates are going down, even in the US, which affects Social Security. Coupled with the aging boomer population, we will be in a similar boat where we will continue to have fewer workers to support each beneficiary. In 1960, we had 5.1 workers per beneficiary and it is projected that in 2030, that number will be 2.3.
Add to that increasing life expectancy which means less workers will be paying for more beneficiaries for a longer period of time.

There is a way to start slowing this down. But that would mean the current ladies would start having babies.

PO3 (Join to see) - Agreed, but that means solving the underlying issues of why the birth rate has been declining. Economics, decent jobs, etc.
It is important to note that in certain demographics, the birth rate is actually on the up. Women are having children later in life and teen pregnancies have dropped dramatically. Also, family planning has gotten better and that is reflected by declining abortion and unintended pregnancy rates.
Also, there's this whole thing with the economy. As it continues to improve, so should the birth-rate.
