This is good for those already in, but still doesn't get the heart of the equality vs. conformity question.

Precisely. It leaves all the people who had signed up to join in limbo. And those currently serving have been given no guarantees, just a temporary stay...

At least this answers some of the questions. Not good for any planning to join, but nothing final on that yet. Maybe in time it will be refined in a manner that is both compassionate toward the individuals and realistic to the needs of the services. Ultimately the needs of the service usually take priority with manpower decisions, and they mostly should but with reason.
