I see it every day. Otherwise qualified people can't join because they're fat-- and have no idea how, or struggle to stick to the commitment of losing the weight.
It's absolutely a National Security issue. But Congress and state governments have seen fit to pass a great deal of legislation ensuring that private companies, making money off of getting and keeping Americans fat, keep control.
Schools can't get funding for PE, serve disgustingly high fat high calorie nutrient deficient school lunches, Recruiters aren't officially allowed to train people to get them in shape to join-- let alone actually trained to do such a task.
This problem has been established for at least a decade that I've been following. It's only gotten worse.

SGT Sean Goodrow Not allowing recruiters to assist a potential candidate with physical conditioning is stupid. When I enlisted, I walked past the Marine recruiters, and didn't bother. Partly I thought to myself "these guys are nuts" Mostly I saw recruiters having a contest pushups and pullups. I knew that I was not going to get myself into good enough shape to do that (I was wrong because when I was in training school in the Navy I could have). If I knew going in that I could work out with these guys to get into the condition needed to excel at boot camp, I would have. For the Army and the Marines, I would think that it would be a huge asset to have a recruiter working out with a pre boot camp recruit. If the recruits come in to boot camp able to excel, that means the DIs have more time to instill the teamwork, the history, the discipline, and physical training necessary to produce an effective soldier or Marine.

This needs to be brought back as a major issue today. Next year 50% of the country will be considered obese. Highest rate of obesity ever in this country the last ten years.
