DOJ files brief on behalf of baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple

SSgt Christopher Brose - That's Europe and Asia. When I traveled or was stationed overseas, I didn't have an expectation to see English. But to walk into a shop here in southern NM or west side Chicago and find everything in Spanish, it's another reminder that America there is an expectation to allow people to express their culture but not necessarily have to embrace the English portion of American culture.

MAJ James Woods - Those are European (Russian language) and Asian stores here in America I'm talking about. I think people are free to have businesses that cater to their own ethnic or language groups.

That said, our laws and legal documents are all in English, our education is in English, and I believe it does no favors to immigrants in any way to encourage them not to learn English.

SSgt Christopher Brose - We don't discourage immigrants to learn English and we don't encourage them either. Counter to what Bannon, Miller and others that support Trump Administration says, the US is a country of immigrants. We encourage immigrants to be themselves and open businesses that cater to whomever they want even if it means only those that speak their language or look like them. So back to original point, if one can sue a business to sell me something regardless of the owner's personal beliefs then one could sue a business to have bilingual standards in their store because we live in a country that considers American English as it's official language by many. Pandora's Box of lawsuits...why stop there?

MAJ James Woods - You're preaching to the choir here. I think businesses should be able to market and cater to whomever they want, and that would include offering their goods in one language or many languages. (We should encourage immigrants to learn English because it is only helpful to the immigrant to be able to function. That doesn't mean they can't continue to speak their native languages, but it will mean that when they want to sign a cell phone contract or rental agreement, they won't have to hire a translator or get their child or nephew to come with them every time they need to do something in English.)

Back before everything went non-smoking, I hated cigarette smoke, and I hated the fact that most places had smoking/non-smoking sections, because the smoke always drifts. (And it was soooo much worse on airplanes!) But when the whole anti-smoking movement started, I was opposed to the push for government to ban smoking anywhere. I wanted the market to do it. Some restaurant owners would decide to go completely non-smoking, and others would decide to cater to smokers, and people could make their own choices about where to go.

I don't like the idea of lawsuits in general, I think there should be far fewer than there are. I dream of the day when a judge fines a plaintiff for bringing a stupid case to his courtroom, and also fines the lawyer for taking the stupid case.
