Right now we are into sunspot cycle 24 and into the ninth year of this cycle and the sun spots are near an all time low. 2005 was the busiest season in the Atlantic and the sun spot activity was average and moving towards a low point. 2010-2012 were all tied for third most active hurricane season and sun spots were on the rise towards the cycle 24 high point.
So the real cause behind Hurricane Irma is ... wait for it ... the reason is that at this time of year hurricanes form in the cape verde area off of Africa and these are usually very intense storms. Nothing new or amazing. It's been happening for thousands of years. The only reason it has caught our attention so much is that we have only tracked hurricanes for the last 125 years or so, there are many times more people who live near the coast these days and we have much more media coverage today.
Irma is nothing special but it is a fascinating weather phenomenon.

I saw something red too. Then I realized it was my ears bleeding from listening to her drivel . ;)

LTC Marc King - it's not disagreement that makes my ears bleed. Just extreme stupidity.

LTC (Join to see) - Fair enough... How would you explain the intensity of these storms? Climate Change I suppose... but there does not seem to be compelling evidence of that given a long look at hurricane activity dating back to the late 1800's when we started to keep records. Intensities come and they go! Shamans with bone rattles summoning the gods to bring death and destruction to the decadent masses? I don't know for sure... got any ideas?

Global temperatures are warming. This may not create a hurricane, but warmer water does add to the intensity.
