Their weakness was much more than just the cost to maintain them, there is a reason they go the nickname "Screaming Alfas" in the acoustic community. They could go fast and deep though. Can you imagine a cooling pump that circulates molten lead? Then imagine what it sounded like when it cavitated.

A properly placed air-dropped torpedo, or an array of torpedoes/depth charges, could catch an Alfa.
