I went to CHENG school with the CO of McCain. He was very thorough. Can not explain what happened here. Yes it is congested seas, yes it is early morning, but this really is basic seamanship and navigation. I would expect that ATG will be getting a good hard look at what NAVCERT looks like...

I remember that every time we transited this Strait the CO/XO were never asleep. This is one of the most dangerous places in the world for any ship, let alone a Navy vessel at "darken ship." We always bear the burden of avoiding other ships.

Sound-powered telephones are widely used on naval vessels. A typical example on a U.S. Navy ship is the "JL" circuit which is used by the lookouts to report visual contacts to the pilot house and the Combat Information Center (CIC). In this case there would be five stations on the circuit (stern lookout, port lookout, starboard lookout, pilot house and CIC).
All these stations would be manned watches underway.
Does anyone fathom the transiting speed in this straight these days 10 knots? Its been a while since I was there and I remember we transited quite slow.
I have been having trouble understanding this as well. Standing that lookout watch, and bridge watches, I just can not fathom how not 1 sailor sounded the 1MC, Sound Powered Phones, or running around the bridge screaming "WATCH OUT".
Lastly is there a thought now that this is not random but other ships are targeting our Navy?

PO3 Aaron Hassay others have had the same thought, but I am not yet buying into the conspiracy theory, not yet. There is a rumor going around that it may have been caused by a Steering Failure, but once again I have to ask: what happened to After Steering or using screws and rudders? I'm waiting for more answers to my myriad questions.
