I believe that we need both polymaths and specialists. Polymaths are the bridges between specialists, but they need to understand their own limitations to be effective. To be fair, specialists too must acknowledge their limitations and accept the help of the polymaths. Cooperation and collaboration are the keys to their success

When i was in college the old "College Bowl" was still a thing... the perennial local winner (advancing to state) was a team made up entirely of Mensans. Between 5 people they represented 9 majors...

We have been moving down the path of specialists for a while (vs polymaths). It starts in high school and runs most of the way through college. We want people specialized, certified, documented, accredited etc. in a field or a course of study etc. There is nothing wrong with that in some professions.

Even medicine and law are fields that have specialize to the point of absurdity.

We do miss the well rounded person that reads/studies many subjects and may not be really deep in any one of them but has good problem solving skills, good perspective and the ability to apply reason and experience
