I know that I may have a different view from many of the other post on this tread. As an African American who serviced my country in Vietnam, I am honestly and sincerely offended by the Confererate Flag and Statues of Confederate Leaders.
I can understand that those who have never suffered from the effects of slavery, may be less than supportive of my position. However, no matter how you define it, the members of the Confederate Army were in fact "Traitors" to this country we all love. Their goal was to succeed from the Union and set up their own country. That is treason. When President Obama was President and we had some states such as Alaska, Texas and others expressing the possibility of of succeed this was traitorous discussions as well.
The primary purpose of the Civil War was Southern States wanting to maintain slavery. They wanted free labor to make the rich richer. If you don't think free labor has an impact, I would suggest you look at the richest state prior to the Civil War and now look at the poorest States after the Civil War. So, if anyone states that the Civil War is not about slavery. I have some Kool-Aid I want you to drink.
The problem with the statues are that they are paid for and being maintained by tax payers dollars. I for one fine that unacceptable.
Why should the money that I send to the government every year, in the form of taxes, be used to support and uphold monuments and statues of people who wanted to keep me enslaved.
Don't get me wrong. Yes, I am offended by these symbols of slavery, but if these statues and monuments were financed by private money and on private land, my opposition would soften greatly.
It's the fact that African Americans who were brutalized, families torn apart, beaten and killed during slavey times, now have offspring who are suppose to pay to honor these "Traitors" to our Constitution with monuments. I'm sorry, but I find that offensive.
Let's be honest. If we wanted to erect a statue of O.J. Simpson, because of his football history. Who would be offended. If I wanted to erect statues of Michael Brown, Johnathan Crawford, Trayvon Martin, Walter Scott, and many others who the African American community believes were killed unjustly. Who would be offended.
Don't take the offense by African Americans lightly. We have a long history enduring the effects of racism in this country.
Inspite of all the racism I have endured in my life as an individual and also systemic. I would still join the Marine Corps. I would still serve in Vietnam. I would still endure the illness I am suffering with from Agent Orange. Yes, I would do it again. Because I love my country. Yes, we have problems, but we are the best country in the world. God Bless You All!

SSG Edward Tilton - of course you don't care about that b/c it's not your sacred cow but someone will be offended and demand another name change. How could you resist THAT call when you'd just changed the names for the same reason but slightly different specifics?
You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that a base could be named after that would not offend someone, somewhere.

The right of the United States Government to change the name of Military Bases in the United States. If we have no jurisdiction we should close them

Well I agree with SSG Deerfield Russia, but so are all the monuments that are suddenly offensive to people. I suggest people offended get a hobby.

This crap is really getting out of hand. As I said yesterday, all of this is mirroring the destruction of cultural and religious artifacts by groups like the Nazi's, Bolsheviks, Taliban, ISIS, and Chinese Revolutionaries. No good can come from it. All it is is an attempt to demoralize or incite the opposition.

There's nothing reasonable to see. If there were a reasonable argument I may not be so black and white about it. But there isn't one. These places were named and these monuments erected well before many of the people on either side of the argument were alive and the people demanding the changes don't bother to try and have any sort of clue as to why. Much in the way of our armor tactics are derived from the tactics used by Nazi Germany during WWII, do we need to scrap those because of where they came from or do we keep them because they've proven to be effective?
Most of the people who have been memorialized were great soldiers and men before and after the Civil War. Back in that time period people held greater loyalty toward their states than they did toward the federal government. That's why Robert E. Lee and others chose to fight with the Confederacy as opposed to the Union.
