Wow LTC (Join to see) that is an over-the-top article. That is not surprising since it is the Atlantic and not a historically focused periodical.
My USMA classmates have been discussing Robert E. Lee. USMA class of 1829 who was wounded in battle during the Mexican American war in 1846, served as Superintendent of USMA from 1852 to 1855 and was offered command of all Federal Forces when the Civil war was breaking out.
I am very familiar with this history of the US Civil War which I have studied for over 50 years.
The Atlantic should stick to what its writers are gifted at and not wade into historical discussions.

History is written by the winners and often with tinted glasses.
That being said, I was not there, nor was anyone else alive today. The man is a historic figure, and I think that those that are making it their life's work to have the statues removed need to get a life, AND MOST LIKELY... A JOB. gainful employment does tend to limit the time that an activist has to do whatever it is that they do (In my opinion, they take after the common house fly in that activists normally eat, crap and bother people.)
Find something that AFFECTS YOU DIRECTLY to get offended by and leave the old statues to the pigeon shit.
