Thanks Sgt Wayne Wood for mentioning USMA class of 2018 Firstie Simone Askew who was selected to be the first black woman to be First Captain.
As a member of the first UMSA class which included woman as cadets I understand the internal politics of West Point and the challenges to be selected as First Captain.
The racial barrier at West Point was broken in 1979 during my USMA class tenure when Cadet Vincent Brooks was selected as First Captain fro the Class of 1980.
General Vincent Brooks is Commander USFK and he is the son of Major General Leo A. Brooks Sr. and brother of Brigadier General Leo A. Brooks Jr. [USMA Class of 1979] both retired.
The first woman to be First Captain in Kristin M. Baker class of 1990 who was selected as First captain in August 1989.
The USMA classes have been discussing rising star Simone Askew for a month or so. Best wishes for her success at First Captain and in her military career.

Good for her, but what does her skin color have to do with her promotion?
