The majority of Americans have a strong sense of individualism and a healthy distrust of those who would take away individual freedoms as guaranteed in our Bill of Rights. However there are always some who want to be a part of something bigger than themselves and feel that giving up their rights will make their country better. Mussonini tapped into the latter ideology and swept his country into war and destruction. According to the article Mussolini's beliefs were: "'...everything is in the state, and no human or spiritual thing exists, or has any sort of value, outside the state. In this sense fascism is totalitarian, and the fascist state which is the synthesis and unity of every value, interprets, develops and strengthens the entire life of the people' Thus, individual liberty vanished."
