It is like Sebago in Maine...In the 70's it was the 3rd clearest lake in the World. I have taken pictures of the bottom @ 40 feet like it was 5 feet. Still that way today, I don't know how it ranks today but many cottages get their water from the lake still and run it through a filter to supply their camps.

Thanks for sharing Capt Seid Waddell. That besides being 41 to 46 degrees in temperature, Rotomairewhenua or Blue Lake is sacred for local Māori people.
The latter rationale is the reason why nobody else is allowed to step into the waters of Lake Rotomairewhenua.

The amazing thing to me is that visibility is as far as distilled water.
