I know there is some uncertainty concerning transgender service members; however we need to look at the big picture. The US Armed forces does not change to fit the member, the member changes to fit military. "Transgender people are twice as likely to serve than cisgender people," I don't necessarily agree with this. Every body joins the military for their own reasons and with someone footing the bill for the gender transformation, sure that is a pretty big incentive for signing on the dotted line. Look, I commend those that have served honorably and will stand by your side when the chips are down..yet, all this press may be having a negative effect. Sometimes it is better to listen than to speak. Bottom line, serve and be part of the "less than 1%." However, do not expect preferential treatment from both members and the services by and large, just expect the same and nothing more...

Re "someone footing the bill for gender transformation" the military currently offers hormone therapy (note that many cisgender service members also receive hormone therapy) and that's it. DOD does not currently pay for Gender Confirming Surgery for transgender troops. Further, DOD spends far more per year on Viagra and its analogs than it does for transgender care, even if you factored in the cost of GCS.
This is a tempest in a teapot, because of fear and ignorance.
If you want to understand the issues surrounding being transgender, please read my website, http://www.RabbahRona.us then ask me as many questions as you like (as long as they are civil, and not hostile).

A blog about transgender transition and Jewish tradition.
I'm a 500 lb schizophrenic double amputee with asthma and diabetes, but I want to serve.
The military should accomodate ME.
