As a SAC aircrew member we got all sorts of training on every accident involving special weapons. Could probably still give some of them off top of my head.

There have been several. Think the last confirmed one was in the early 90s. One of the advantages of the end of the Cold War.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - damn that's crazy I know that the collapse of the Soviet Union produced many national security concerns tracking of all of the Soviet union's nuclear materials was being one of them.

The Air Force accidentally dropped a nuclear device on Mars Bluff, SC (outside of Florence,SC) in the 50s. The conventional explosives detonated BUT the warhead did not. It destroyed a house, killed a few animals, and spread radioactive material in the area. The military got to the area and secured it. The military then took away barrels of soil that was not "radioactive ". The family that lived in the house was never able to move back into their house.

There is a placard on the east side of US301 between Florence, SC and Francis Marion University that makes note of the incident.

There are some outside the coast of Georgia that were dumped. I do not know if they have been found.

I remember that some ( I think two) were lost off of the coast of Georgia and were not recovered.
