The haunting song Sgt MacKenzie was perfectly chosen for this scene. It really adds to the emotion of the moment. I don't care how accurate it is, I love this movie.

IMHO this is one of the best anti-war films ever made and brought back a lot of personal memories for me.
My mom was the senior NCO wife in base housing in 1964, and the cabbies would deliver the telegrams to her, and we'd walk to the quarters of the family in question. Mom would comfort the grieving wife and I would take the kids outside and play with them.
When I was stationed at Ft Bragg in 1979 I volunteered and was selected for Casualty notification duty, which was the most emotionally debilitation job I have ever done. Later I was on funeral detail. It was an honor and a privilege to serve my fellow soldiers as they passed over the rainbow bridge, and into glory.

SSG Diane R. That is an interesting take on the film. It certainly doesn't portray war as a glorious or beautiful thing as some of the older movies did.
I also find your phraseology for your time on funeral duty interesting. I don't often see people put it in those terms.

I have not seen the movie (not much of a movie-goer), but this scene makes me think I need to correct that. Nice choice, PO3 Steven Sherrill.

PO3 Steven Sherrill - Now that I'm fully retired, I have time for matinees without having to work them into a schedule. The O'neil Cinema chain around here only charges $5.00 for military (active duty, retired, veterans with ID, and they'll take VSO dues cards as proof) and their family members. They're pretty loose with the family member definition, too. My granddaughter's boyfriend counted a couple of weeks ago. I have "Hacksaw Ridge" and "Dunkirk" on my immediate list. I'll have to borrow "We Were Soldiers" and watch it on DVD or find it on cable.
