Right beside the Nixon tapes? This act would be even more evidence of collusion and cover up by the DNC.

Insurance policy I guess. He probably knows a smashed drive can be reconstructed so smashing it in front of people but keeping the pieces might have served him well. You know a book deal too. Everyone wants a book deal.

If the platters on the hard drives have been shattered, then even the FBI and NSA cannot retrieve the date from them. If they can, they don't just have mad skills, they have alien technology. If the outside of the drive has been smashed, but the platters are intact, then, yes, even if the circuit boards have been damaged, the data is retrievable.
I stand by my original statement, if the platters have been shattered, the data is gone.

I tried to smash a hard drive with a sledge hammer. Barely dented it. Can't speak to discrete components, but it's easier said than done. Why would an IT expert keep these parts?

If you really want to erase a drive, stick it in the microwave. Gone, clean, unrecoverable. Also, the light show is awesome...of course the microwave is useless for anything but cleaning hard drives from that point on, unless you like chemicals in your food.

Yet another reason that Wasserman-Shultz didn't want the FBI to inverstigate the hacking?

There is an E-6 sub sailor in prison for doing the same thing. He made a mistake by throwing it in the trash. Anyone that believes equal justice for all probably also believes in Unicorns.
