I just "reprimand" him. By that I mean, document a counseling statement and perhaps have him complete some company training and maybe present a training seminar on things he's learned, but firing him seems excessive, even if current policy allows it.

The 70 yr old exercised very poor judgment in trying to intervene and somehow feel he had an obligation or duty of some sort to stop the theft. The perps could easily have harmed or killed him or others in the process. He could have raised hell, made a fuss, waved his arms and run about, called 911., copied down a description of the perps and their vehicle. As noble as his actions may seem I do not want my granddaughter caught in the crossfire as perps flee with $100 worth of stolen tools from HD. HD could care less about your health and safety and only want to avoid larger potential legal liability from the collateral damages.
