A nice summary article. Just as in the DoD with CYBERCOM bringing together the best elements of the Intel and Signal branches to merge and train the Cyber Warriors we need for both offensive and defensive capabilities. Corporations need that specialty personnel that is trained to handle Information Assurance that is merged with Information Technology. If this weren't a field unto itself, you wouldn't see so many colleges and universities offering degrees that are specific to this field.

Unfortunately, the Air Force has yet to cut the cord between the supporting role of IT and those who are now among the operational units. It is highly conceivable that Cyber troops will eventually find themselves in IT at some point in their career (in some case for the rest of their career), and those who grew up in IT finding their way into an operational capability they don't understand. The Air Force needs to create two completely distinct AFSCs and allow each to manage their own.

I've learned some of the differences in the way each Service manages their workforce. The Marines tend to make you a generalist prior to breaking out into specialties, so we will start out os basic help desk Marines then graduate to a cyber defense role. If the USAF operates like you mentioned, I would defeinitely see the benefits to it.
