Great piece of history. It was troublesome that they did not believe him and relegated him to work rather than help him find his unit.

There are many gems yet to be unearthed in the detritus of history. They're found in letters and diaries or in the countless bureaucratic records lost in forgotten files. Those of us who write history and historical fiction are always on the search for them. I used two such gems from Civil War diaries to draw parallels to the revolution in Cuba and thus widen my understanding of people and their reactions to the stresses of war. There is, however, a trap when people attempt to use such "gems" to formulate conclusions that fit an agenda rather than any truth. We call that propaganda.
