He also gave the KGB the identities of US / CIA covert intelligence agents in the Soviet Union. Lonetree was charged with two capital (death sentences) of espionage - but never executed. He was charged together with Cpl. Arnold Bracy of providing female KGB agents access on numerous occasions to the secure code room and communications facilities of US Embassy Moscow. Of course by 1987 US IC was well aware the US Embassy Moscow was riddled with bugs left by Soviet construction workers - confirmed in 1991 when former KGB officer disclosed blueprints for the bugs. The Embassy was subsequently torn apart and rebuilt brick by brick - reopening in May 2000. The top two floors were knocked off and replaced by four new secure floors. While I understand and support the sentence - US Embassy Moscow was a leaky sieve. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

The Bugged Embassy Case: What Went Wrong
LEAD: In 1969, after years of tortuous negotiation, the Nixon Administration signed an agreement with the Soviet Union providing for new embassy complexes in Washington and Moscow.
I also recall the embassy incident which should stand forever as the shining example of American incompetence, perhaps only exceeded by US actions in Iraq after Sadam. I understood at the time the perp was an embassy security guard who was of course seduced by the Ruskie agent. Reminds me of the recent TV series 'The Americans' with Ruskies infiltrating the US gvt and FBI. Hard to imagine how a security guard would have had access to blueprints of the embassy, although it is feasible to believe he could have allowed her access to secure areas. Hopefully the perp rots in hell at some point in time for his actions. He got off extremely light which is yet another example of our weak will to fight the Ruskies in the long run.
