They used to have the right. Heck, once upon a time you could get fined for showing up to a collegiate examination if you weren't equipped with a sword at your side.

SGT Aaron Atwood are you not forgetting one minor (actually major) detail? That during the time period that you are referencing, that it was the upper classes (nobility and landed gentry) that attended collegiate/university studies. During that time period most individuals in the lower classes did not have the right to bear arms. Maybe you should read the Magna Carta a little bit more closely, and then the derivative laws based upon it and English Common Law of the time.

100% agree, I bet many Londoners wish they had the right to carry right now....That dog would not hunt here, a dozen or more would draw down on them immediately....I know I would.
