It's not a question of what the earth's ideal is. The earth was just fine for millions of years before we became the dominant species, and will be just fine long after we're replaced by the next up and comer.
The question is, how do we keep from making the environment unsuitable for US...It's us we need to worry about, not the planet.

SFC Michael Hasbun - during the time man has been on earth the climate has been warmer and colder. Is man really driving this ? I am not convinced. The other issue is a little bit philosophical. We are a part of nature and controlled by nature, not the other way around.
