You can't look at a 1967 incident with 2017 glasses. In April of 1967 America **WAS NOT** an ally, friend, bed buddy or acquaintance of Israel. Note that all of Israel's weapons were French, British or home-made. In the UN, our voting record **AGAINST** anything Israel did was as anti-semetic as could be. America was in a position to expand it's Middle Eastern position and keep poking where it wasn't needed. Hence, an increase in spy activity from January 1967 onwards. Note that the USA was instrumental in killing the 1955 Arab-Israeli war, once it looked like the pro-Israel side was going to triumph. The USA was doing everything in it's power to stop weapon sales to Israel, etc. When it became obvious what Egypt was doing to Israel's water supply, the USA pretended to not answer the Israeli phone calls.

A Mossad agent/ambassador/government official visited the American ambassador and took him out to dinner. A shopping list of weapons and UN support votes was given to him. The American laughed and ripped the note up throwing it at the Israeli. The Israeli laughed harder. "You stupid arrogant pig. The Russians have promised to quadruple that list in exchange for basing their submarines in Haifa. STUPID PIG!" MI6 agents reported the Israeli smacking the American with the pieces of paper across the face. The American could not find scotch tape fast enough and soon, the now repaired Israeli shopping list was being encrypted and flash-trafficked to Pennsylvania Avenue. Now...you can take any story you read/hear with a pinch of salt. Hell, that story came from the Brits, so there's any possible way that spin could be spun. Other parts came from the Russians as well so again, spinners man your wheels. But the American truth of the matter is that big industry suddenly got senatorial/congressional approval to "support" the Israeli military.

Me being a betting man, I'm gonna go with weapons sales being the definition of "support." Now your inherent problem is that LBJ is great at keeping secrets within his own party, but piss poor at keeping secrets within the US gov. So after spending a long year road-blocking Israel, he now had to suddenly re-word everything in an ever so friendly way to allow money to flow Eastward. Nasser's cutting off Israel's water supply and France is cutting off Israel's weapons. So its obvious from the cheap seats that Egypt's wanting war with Israel and Paris wants that war slanted in Egypt's favor. So the IDF needs toys fast. Landing "toys" in the middle of a war zone is not going to work. And if America floods IDF-mart with tanks and planes and bullets and bombs, whats the UN/Middle East going to think? They're going to assume that the previously neutral Americans are taking Israel's side. But if the weapons don't reach Israel in time, the desperate Tel Aviv government will call in that Russian favor. And the Russians WILL NOT CARE what the world/UN thinks about them arming Israel.

Now, training in the Navy trumps everything. Its not uncommon for you to be at sea, routine patrol and someone tell you to pull in because another crew needs to use your vessel. We would do it all the time. Pull into port, offload live torpedoes, load test torpedoes, and let another crew take our ship out for weapon testing. Nothing out of the ordinary. Historically, "false flag" operations are nothing new either. Germany's invasion of Poland barely 25 years earlier, was a classic FF op. As was Japan's "Manchuria incident." So "faking an attack was nothing new." So what President Murphy would have done, is pull the Liberty in, dump the crew, put 'em on leave, all the while telling them another crew is taking the boat out for training, and then send it out with a 10 man ghost crew who abandon ship at the right moment. Then sink the empty ship, blame Egypt and come in, whistles tooting/flags flying to save the day. Unfortunately, President Murphy was not in office. LBJ was.

The IDF assumed (being intelligent) that the ship would be empty/skeleton crew. Hell, even the Germans killed during the Polish "raid" were corpses from a morgue dressed in German uniforms. No one's stupid enough to kill their own people, right? Don't answer that America...

1LT Sandy Annala - let me state that any and all American ships on the surface FLY an AMERICAN FLAG while underway 24/7. There is NO DOUBT in my mind that USS Liberty was in fact flying the Colors of our country at the time she was attacked; NONE! at all.

1LT Sandy Annala - Looking at the Summary of Events (BTW I have studied this attack a few times during my career, including at the Senior Enlisted Academy.) There is no doubt in my mind that this attack was a suppression attack to keep Liberty from following and reporting what Israel was doing by attacking, without provocation, her neighbors. Israel actually started the Six-Day War in 1967 and did not want anyone to know about it.
