Back when I was much higher up in a company, I had a rule. I don't go to meetings unless my boss did (He owned the company). I had a firm belief that 90% of what needed to be done in a meeting could be settled in advance of the meeting via a phone call, or email before hand.
Sure, some meetings are necessary. Like an azimuth check. Make sure everyone is going the right direction. But use them sparingly, when you think things have gotten off track, not just because you can.
That doesn't mean you can't have a quick get together in the morning of some key players for 5 minutes for a plan of the day... but when you have to interrupt real work to attend a meeting, something has gone wrong.
