I live in St Pete (Pinellas County) and followed this case. The girls falsely "borrowed" a car. The girls are in the system for prior bad deeds. The owner of the car passed the girl's identities to the police. Car was located and a short chase began. Then a decision was made to drop the chase and catch them later, since they knew who they were. The girls did not know the chase was broken off. They were heading east bound and thought they could take a short cut and jump on the southbound lane of I-275. It was pitch black outside and the girls drove into the small lake at the cemetery going about 50mph. The police did not witness the accident. They were not close. By the time the police discovered the girls were underwater, it was too late.
The family is blaming the police because they started the chase, then they are also blaming the police for not being there when the car into the water. The Pinellas County Sheriff is a good man and will not cave to these lawsuits.

Not unlike the quote about Trevon Johnson who was killed while doing a B and E,
“You have to look at it from every child’s point of view that was raised in the hood,” Harris continued. “You have to understand … how he gonna get his money to have clothes to go to school? You have to look at it from his point of view.”
Ya that all makes crime OK.

CPO (Join to see) - I don't get that mind set, sorry. I firmly believe that you work for what you need and want in this world. Stealing or robbery isn't work.

The family is just being human, looking for scapegoats to relieve themselves of responsibility for their own failures. Hopefully they eventually come to understand why hey are wrong to blame anyone but the teens who stole the car and the adults who failed to provide necessary guidance to those teens. It might save lives at some point in the future.
As for police, they need to realize that for all practical intent, they are always on camera. Hearts and minds need to be a priority as well as the safety of officers.
