"It’s extraordinary that the battle was fought at all. It was very high risk undertaking by our very new ally when the prospect of the Japanese taking Hawaii was high. Were the Americans to lose the base, the fight back would have been anchored in San Diego. At the outbreak of War the geopolitics of the Asia/Pacific were dominated by the European Empires and rising Japan. US power would need some years to mobilise."

Great article. The IJN lost its momentum after Coral Sea and lost its initiative after Midway. What was even more important was that Naval Warfare was never the same after Coral Sea. Naval Airpower became the preeminent arbiter of naval battles rather then the battle line

I was in Australia for the 50th Anniversary celebrations, I will always remember a US carrier Battle group sailing into harbor and the TV announcer saying that that was more power in defense of Australia that the entire Australian military combined.
