That was a different generation, the "greatest generation," and commitment to marriage had a different meaning for that generation than it does today. That's a sad, but true fact.

I have no problem with war brides. As the article says, they gave up a lot to marry an American. And they remained, for the most part - on the whole, committed to the marriage vows they took.

I can't help but remember the Vietnam movie "Heaven & Earth" with Tommy Lee Jones. It was based on her life story. Anyone see it? My-ex mother in law lived through the buzz bombings and bombing campaign in London during WWII. I loved to talk to her about it, but what a miserable life she and her mother had. They were bombed out twice and wounded once. I didn't know this until much later and that explained the misery that got passed along to all the kids.

I met a little girl in Thailand that I had planned to go back for, but circumstances and my mom changed those plans. Looking back, I believe I would have been much better off with her than the two crazy round-eyes I ended up marrying. I often wonder and remember her fondly.
